"Whitman A Study" By John Burroughs. Burroughs was one of Whitman's "Disciples." This edition has a pasted-in signature of John Burroughs. The Burrroughs signature was on an original letter to William L. Finley. I can make out on the back of the Burroughs signature is a notation by Burroughs, wishing Finley a "happy x-mas." William Finley signed this edition twice, once on the front end paper and again on the contents page. Also on the inside front cover is the signature of Emerson Stringham.
Note: William Lovell Finley (1876-1953) was an early American biologist, writer and filmmaker. (no surprise that he was friends with the Naturalist Burroughs). Like Burroughs, Finley had connections with President Theodore Roosevelt. http://www.oregonencyclopedia.org/entry/view/finley_william_l_1876_1953_/
Emerson Stringham (1888-1960), first was an attorney, then abondanded the practice and went into biological/fisheries work. http://heinonline.org/HOL/LandingPage?collection=journals&handle=hein.journals/jpatos43&div=56&id=&page=
