Hamilton, Ontario. June 15, 2013.
Prior to his appointment as Medical Superintendent at the London asylum, Dr. Bucke worked briefly at the Hamilton Insane Asylum in 1876. In the gallery below is all that remains of the Hamilton Asylum. This building pictured is the Century Manor, built in 1884 (after Whitman's visit in 1880). It was built as a reception hospital and housed 80 men. In 1890, it was used for the detention of the criminally insane. An interesting note about this building, it is rumored to be one of the most haunted buildings in all of Ontario! Fortunately, I did not encounter any ghosts on my visit. I did talk to a security guard on the grounds though who has been inside and reported that that it is a creepy experience inside the building and that he will not go in alone. Notice in a few of the pictures below, there is an open window on the third floor (in the left front of the building).Read More
